Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

2011

352 p

Jacob’s beloved Grandpa Portman always told these fantastic stories about the Children’s Home he grew up in.  When Grandpa Portman was young he escaped from Poland to a secluded island with other children.  Once there he saw amazing children that could levitate, were invisible and other fantastic things.

People thought Grandpa Portman was nuts, but when he was killed horrifically Jacob begin to question how much is the truth.  Jacob and his therapist convince his parents that it would help him to go to the island to prove that his grandfather’s
stories were just that – stories.

Once he gets to the Island he finds himself pulled into a loop with the children and that the stories Grandpa Portman told were
true.  The “children” were stuck in a loop, reliving the same day over and over.

The book draws you in and you cannot wait to read what happens next.  It is an enjoyable read,
but disappointing in the end when you realize there is no end and that there is definitely a sequel on the way.

What is the best way to communicate?

If I Stay by Gayle Foreman

If I Stay
Gayle Foreman

199 pages

2009

“Am I dead?” Mia asks herself.  Imagine the disbelief and shock when “you wake up” ar nd realize that you have been in a horrific car accident.  That both of you parents were killed instantly.  You rush over to help your little brother only to find out it is you lying on the ground.   It’s almost like watching movie, but you are the actor.  She is quickly rushed to the hospital.  She is more worried about her little brother.

The next thing people are telling her that it is her choice to stay.  That would be a tough decision on anyone much less a teenage girl whos family just died in the same car accident that critically injured her.  Do you just close your eyes and let yourself leave this world?  Do you stay for the people who love you?  Her grandparents, her boyfriend, her best friend?

Thoughout her books memories are triggered from her life.  Memories that may give her answers to what her future may be.

This has to definitely be one of my favorite books so far this year.  I cannot wait to read Gayle Foreman’s book “Where she went”.  Pick it and I can almost guarantee you won’t put it down….well at least you won’t want to.

YA Book Discussion : Hate List by Jennifer Brown

On September 20, 2011 at 4:30 teens will be discussing Hate List.

How do you put your life back together after the unthinkable happens?  How do you cope with what may have been your part in this terrible tragedy?  How do you live with your guilt? Your grief?  How do you make amends and move on with your life?

It is  a tough topic, but one that we have seen repeated in the news.

“After every school shooting unleashes a torrent of questions: what if, what next, why me? Val’s in the middle of the storm; her boyfriend pulled the trigger. Now, Val’s drowning in guilt, sadness, and confusion. If you’ve ever been torn up inside and feeling lost, find the time to read Hate List; you’ll love it.” Patrick Jones, author ofThings Change and The Tear Collector

“…This is a startling, powerful, and poignant account of the incidents leading up to, immediately following, and continuing through the teen’s senior year of realization and recovery.” — School Library Journal (starred review)

Book Trailer: The Lost Hero

I will tell anyone who will listen that I love Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series.  We have even held an after hours Percy Jackson theme party.  The Heroes of Olympus, The Lost Hero left me wanting more.  I thought that I would share with you Disney’s Book Trailer.

Let me know if you are a fan, too!
